Known Slack Limitations
Check your Slack plan and API access before relying on automated user or group management.
Slack plan features determine which user-management APIs UMA can use. Connecting Slack or changing permissions cannot unlock an API that your plan does not include. Review these requirements before setup and rollout.
Slack Plan Requirements
UMA uses Slack’s SCIM API to create and deactivate users and manage group membership. SCIM is available on Business+ and Enterprise plans, so Enterprise is not a blanket requirement for this workflow.
| Slack plan | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Free and Pro | SCIM is not generally included. Slack documents an exception for workspaces connected to a Salesforce organization. Unless that exception applies and your workspace has SCIM access, UMA's SCIM-based user and group actions are unavailable. A plan with SCIM access, such as Business+ or Enterprise, is required for those actions. |
| Business+ | SCIM is available for workspace users and groups. Confirm the required permissions and UMA group mappings during setup. |
| Enterprise | SCIM is available at the organization level. Install and authorize the integration for the Slack organization, rather than only an individual workspace. |
Administrative Roles Are Separate
Slack reserves its broader Admin APIs, including assigning administrative roles, for Enterprise plans. Managing membership in a group through SCIM is different from making someone a Slack admin or owner.
Other Limits to Review
Authorization
SCIM requires the admin permission scope. The Slack account authorizing access must retain Owner or Admin privileges. On Enterprise, an Org Owner must install the SCIM app.
Groups
UMA reads groups exposed through SCIM. On Business+, these are workspace-level groups; on Enterprise, they are organization-level identity-provider groups. A group appearing in Slack does not by itself confirm that UMA can manage it.
Offboarding
Through SCIM, Slack accounts are deactivated, not permanently deleted.
Before Relying on Automation
Before rollout, confirm that your Slack plan includes the API access needed by the actions you intend to automate, authorize the connection with an appropriately privileged account, and test the required user and group actions.
If your plan does not include the required API access, those actions cannot be automated through UMA. You must change to a Slack plan that includes that access. Changing connection settings or granting additional permissions cannot unlock an API excluded from your plan.
